Renewable Newstead (RN) is making great progress to develop a planning application for a local, small-scale solar farm that will deliver locally generated, renewable, affordable energy to the Newstead community.

Covid-19 has been a challenging time for our community – not being able to gather for community meetings and provide updates on recent progress has been frustrating, but the project is gathering momentum nonetheless.

Planning consultant Energy Forms has been working with the RN committee to compile data and information on land at Captain’s Gully that has been selected for the solar farm.  Factors being considered include the location of the land to existing electricity infrastructure, topography, various planning overlays and the current and future use of the land for farming.  Potential sites were assessed after Newstead landowners responded to RN’s call for land via an expression of interest in 2019.

The RN Committee plans to submit the solar farm planning application to the Victorian Minister for Planning within the coming weeks.

RN Committee meetings continue to be held on the first Monday of each month (7pm at the Newstead Arts Hub) and are open to community members.
